The soffit board is tucked away under the fascia board and is the board that you see most of from street level. The soffit can be ventilated to allow the flow of air into the roof area. Alternatively, ventilation can be provided over the top of the fascia board. Many people prefer the latter solution these days. Without adequate ventilation, condensation can form in the roof void increasing the risk of timber decay.

The word “soffit” is derived from the French language, and literally translated means “fixed underneath.” Normally it’s installed under the main roof, but a soffit is also used under porches, under arches or columns, under stairs… almost anywhere where there is a visible ceiling.

In terms of maintenance there is not a great deal to do with soffits, except ensure that they are kept clean for appearance sake, and also to make sure any ventilation slots or grilles are also kept clean and free from anything which might prevent the air flow from moving easily through them. It is wise to do this at the same time as any cleaning of gutters or eaves troughs takes place. Soffit basically cover the rafters of your roof which would otherwise be exposed to the elements and would allow moisture, extreme temperatures and birds into your attic!

Sometimes referred to as the “quiet” architectural feature due to them being tucked away under the eaves of a roof, or above a covered walkway, soffits tend to not attract any attention until something goes wrong. Manufactured from a variety of materials ranging from traditional wood, through to more recent vinyl/UPVC or even slightly more exotic metals such as aluminium, zinc or steel, the soffit is one of those features that should really be installed and forgotten about, with just a little routine maintenance and cleaning to ensure they stay in shape and looking good. Wooden soffits, which give a beautiful natural appearance, do need to be painted regularly to protect them against rotting.
