The fascia or fascia board is mounted at the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the house and is sometimes called the ROOFLINE. However, normally it is referred to as the main board that carries the gutter or eaves trough – the fascia or fascias. The fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof and is fixed directly to the roof trusses, usually doing the work of supporting the bottom row of tiles and supporting all the guttering or eaves troughs. This is quite a task considering that during a hard downpour, several gallons of water can be washing down the gutters or eaves troughs each second.

Fascia boards are available in a large number of colors, styles and sizes to suit most applications. Sometimes ventilation is provided above the fascia as an alternative to going through the soffit. When using 16mm and 25mm fascia, it is not necessary to use a support board. The guttering or eaves troughs then fix directly to the fascia.

The fascia of your house are also significant for another reason, and that’s purely aesthetic. They are the vertical boards directly beneath the roof and are therefore highly visible. After time, fascia boards tend to become weathered and consequently discolored and can benefit from annual maintenance which includes either painting if they are made from timber, or just cleaning if they are vinyl or metal. During this annual maintenance the fascia should also be checked for rot or damage as they support the guttering or eaves troughs.

Again, annual maintenance of the fascia can be carried out at the same time as the gutters or eaves troughs themselves, the soffits and siding and any remedial work carried out before the winter which will help avoid further damage being caused to the items themselves or even further down the line to the property itself.
