Siding Services

Siding may be made of wood, metal, vinyl, masonry, or composite materials and is normally attached directly to the building structure (or studs in the case of wood construction), or to an intermediate layer of wood (boards, planks, plywood, oriented strand board) called sheathing or sheeting. An intermediate air/moisture barrier such as house-wrap or felt paper may be applied to the sheathing or a modern sheathing material also serves as an air/moisture barrier.

Siding is applied to the walls of a house or other building as a means of protecting the walls from water, the effects of weather, to provide insulation, and just as importantly to provide major aesthetics to the structure. Not all walls have siding, but most wooden constructions do, and other buildings such as log buildings can also have siding added.

Siding is usually fitted as horizontal or vertical boards, shingles, or sheet materials. Whichever method is chosen, the most important aspect is to prevent wind and rain infiltration through the joints and this is normally achieved by overlapping, covering or sealing the joints, or by creating an interlocking joint such as a tongue and groove or rabbet. Normally, rigid, fixed joints are avoided between siding materials as they tend to expand and contract depending on the weather and temperature, often resulting in leaks if the boards can’t move with the temperature differentials.

Wood siding is probably the most common in the US and is very versatile and beautiful and can be used on a wide variety of building structures and can be painted or stained in any color. However, wooden siding requires more maintenance than other popular solutions such as vinyl or masonry, requiring treatment every four to nine years depending on how severe your weather is. Ants and termites can also be a threat to many types of wood siding, which means that additional maintenance and preventative treatment are a wise precaution. Wood is a moderately renewable resource and is biodegradable and can provide some insulation and structural properties when compared to thinner synthetic cladding materials.

Mostly our company recommends vinyl siding as being the most versatile, long lasting and durable material – fit it and forget it!
